Media 8 Entertainment announced today that Charlize Theron, star of its film “Monster,” won the Academy Award last night for “Best Actress.” The Academy Awards are the film industry's highest honors, and Ms. Theron accepted the award on the internationally televised gala ceremony. The Oscar win was the first for Ms. Theron.
"All of us at Media 8 are tremendously proud of Charlize and delighted with all her success," said Sammy Lee, Vice Chairman of the Board. "This Academy Award represents the culmination of an amazing journey for “Monster” and for our entire creative team that worked on it. It's been very heartening to see our independently produced film having such a successful release, and to see the film continue to build on the incredibly positive response it has received from both critics and audiences alike. With this Oscar win, we expect even more people will be prompted to seek out ‘Monster' at the theater."
"This highly prestigious Oscar win is a testament to Charlize's amazing performance in ‘Monster,'" noted David Gaynes, Sr. V.P. of Marketing. “All of us here have been thrilled to see Charlize receive acclaim from so many segments of the film industry, and we are very pleased that she has now been honored with the highest award by the Academy as well," added Gaynes. In the award season leading up to the Academy Awards, Ms. Theron has already garnered numerous other major prizes. Most recently she won the Screen Actors Guild Award, the prestigious Silver Bear award at the Berlin Film Festival, and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama. Her other major wins include prizes from the Broadcast Film Critics Association, the National Board of Review, the San Francisco Film Critics Circle, the National Society of Film Critics, the Southeastern Film Critics, the New York Film Critics Online, the Las Vegas Film Critics, the Dallas/ Fort Worth Film Critics, and the CNN Radio Movie Awards.
“Monster” also continues to perform impressively at the North American box office, and the media attention surrounding Ms. Theron's Oscar win should keep the film's box office appeal very strong. Over this past weekend, “Monster” grossed an additional CDN $2.8 million (US $2.1 million), according to Daily Variety. Through ten weekends of release, “Monster” has grossed nearly CDN $36 million (US $27 million) cumulatively. |
